Leonard Floyd needed 2 months to recover from concussion setbacks

Leonard Floyd's rookie season ended in bizarre fashion in December. His final game was an 18-snap outing in a loss to the Redskins on Christmas Eve. In the first quarter of that game, Floyd lunged to tackle running back Rob Kelley but crashed the crown of his helmet into the midsection of 336-pound Bears defensive tackle Akiem Hicks.

The young outside linebacker lay motionless on the Soldier Field grass temporarily but somehow continued playing the rest of the quarter. (No one on the Bears staff identified the concussion immediately. Neither did the NFL's independent concussion spotter.) But after suffering his second concussion in 34 days " both coming in head-down collisions with Hicks " Floyd was inactive for the season finale and left to fight through head trauma that set him back for far longer than he anticipated.

Speaking to reporters for the first time since January, Floyd detailed the severity of his concussion setback.

"It took me two months to really feel like I was back to myself," he said after Wednesday's minicamp practice. "I was just at the house relaxing and getting my mind back together. And after those two months, I felt back the same."

When Floyd left Halas Hall in January, he said, Bears staff ordered him to take it easy and not begin working out again until he felt 100 percent. But, Floyd noted, he didn't return to normal until deep into February.
